It is also effective in reducing pain and lesions for people with oral lichen planus.

Hyaluronic Acid - Aftamed contains Hyaluronic acid which is an endogenous substance (naturally found within the body). It has a large number of essential functions in the body and is found naturally in a number of body tissues, such as eyes, tears, skin and oral mucosa. Hyaluronic acid is characterized by high viscosity, and has been used for decades in health care related to eye surgery, treatment of burns and the treatment of rheumatic diseases. Hyaluronic acid gives skin properties of resistance and shape retention. It is also a basic component of healthy tissue in the mouth. The Hyaluronic acid contained within AftaMed is very similar to that found naturally in tissue in the mouth. It is dissolved within a matrix that is able to adhere to the tissue in the mouth and hold it in place against the mucous membranes.
Polycarbophil - Aftamed also contains polycarbophil, a protein that attaches to the wet mucosa. This implies a direct mechanical protection and keeps the hyaluronic acid in place of the wound.
The exact mechanism of how AftaMed works is not known, but it is thought that when the hyaluronic acid comes into contact with the damaged or ulcerated mouth tissue that it activates the natural repair mechanism, "kick-starting" the body to repair itself and aiding healing. At the same time, it helps the body to prevent future damage to the tissue and reduces the likelihood of recurrences, extending the time between attacks.
Directions: 1-2 drops applied to affected area(s) 2-3 times a day, for one week or until symptoms disappear. Aftamed can be applied as often as you need. The initial analgesic effect wears off after 30-40 minutes. Aftamed has no side effects and it is harmless to swallow. It is advisable not to eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after application.
