EMLA cream is used as a topical anesthesia of the skin before needle puncture, insertion of IV catheters, blood sampling and for minor skin surgery.
Its a mixture of two local anesthetics, lignocaine and prilocaine. These local anesthetics are combined with special agents which allow the products to pass through the skin. Once through the skin the numbing effect they produce allows minor surgical procedures to be done without you feeling any pain. However you may still experience sensations such as pressure and touch in this area.
emla® cream and patches contain prilocaine 2.5% & lignocaine 2.5%. Always read the label and use as directed. If symptoms persist see your healthcare professional.
